  • Flagger

    Nelson River Construction is currently hiring Flaggers for various road construction projects in MB.

    As a leading heavy construction contractor in Winnipeg MB, Nelson River Construction (NRC) operates inter-provincially with the expertise in many areas of heavy construction; from asphalt paving, concrete, aggregate processing and underground services.

    Requirements:

    • Applicants must be 18 years of age or older;

    • Must be willing and able to work 12 – 14 hours per day;

    • Have steel toe safety boots;

    • Must possess a valid driver’s license and have own means of transportation to and from the job site.

  • Construction Labourer

    Reporting to the Foreman, the Labourer is responsible for providing physical labour support during all phases of construction and production. The Labourer provides a broad range of support in areas such as: hand-work, moving materials, clearing terrain, site preparation, shoveling and basic equipment operation.

    Requirements & Qualifications:

    • Class 5 Driver’s License;

    • Must be physically able to repetitively lift and carry at least 50 lbs. on a regular basis;

    • Must have a strong work ethic, ensuring commitment to the team and the company;

    • Must be able to work with little supervision; must be self-directed;

    • Punctual and available to work full time, over-time and occasional weekends;

    • Ability to safely operate equipment would be an asset;

    • Familiar with construction methods, tools and materials.

    Responsibilities:

    • Execute the daily plan and work sequence under the direction of the Supervision, completing construction work in an effective safety-conscious manner;

    • Operate small equipment including plate packers, tail-end of asphalt spreader and tools etc, training will be provided as necessary;

    • Load, unload and move construction materials around the worksite;

    • Using a rake or shovel, spread gravel and other construction materials over road surfaces, building or decreasing slopes or leveling asphalt to fine grade specifications;

    • Ensure worksite is organized and free of clutter, rubble and garbage;

    • Shovel asphalt mix into areas inaccessible to paving machines, and compact mix using rakes and hand tampers;

    • Conduct pre-operational checks on equipment;

    • Fuel, lubricate, clean and maintain equipment;

    • Perform miscellaneous activities throughout the day, as directed;

    • Good attitude, common sense, the ability to follow directions, hard work and dependability;

    • Have strong logical/critical thinking, decision making and problem-solving skills.

    Willing to work out of town and in remote locations, as required.

    Willing to work overtime and weekends as required.

  • Class 1 Truck Driver

    Nelson River Construction is currently hiring a motivated Class 1 Truck Driver.

    As a leading heavy construction contractor in Winnipeg MB, Nelson River Construction (NRC) operates inter-provincially with the expertise in many areas of heavy construction; from asphalt paving, concrete, aggregate processing and underground services.

    We focus on providing a supportive work environment that exceeds expectations and continually improves the quality of everything we do.

    The successful candidate must be willing to work out of town and at times in a camp environment.

    The Position:

    Reporting to the Foreman or Plant Operator, the Truck Driver is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of Tandem/Triple Axel trucks and trailers; transporting and delivering materials or equipment to the job site.

    Requirements:

    • 2 years’ experience in road construction industry;

    • Maintain a valid class 1 Driver’s License, clean abstract and be insurable;

    • Knowledge of road construction materials, road construction processes and industry requirements;

    • Must be physically able to repetitively lift and carry at minimum 50 lbs on a regular basis;

    • Good attitude, sound judgement, ability to follow directions, hard work and dependability are extremely important.

    Responsibilities:

    • Operate the Tandem, Tri-Dump, End-Dump and Live Bottom trucks and equipment in a safe and appropriate manner;

    • Perform daily maintenance and safety checks of equipment. Ensure all vehicle documents and applicable permits are valid and present in vehicle;

    • Ensure proper loading of asphalt and aggregates and verify the type and weight of materials being hauled;

    • Ensure on-time delivery of asphalt, aggregates and other road construction materials; reducing bottle-necks in construction process;

    • Hose, shovel or clean out the truck box to remove debris when necessary;

    • Ensure the area above and around the truck is clear of overhead lines and other obstructions before raising the box to dump loads;

    • Promote, execute and adhere to the company’s safety program and encourage all employees , sub-contractors and consultants to adopt safety as a culture;

    • Attend and actively contribute to safety meetings;

    • Fill out all necessary paperwork accurately, neatly and completely;

    • Use proper two-way radio etiquette;

    • Perform miscellaneous activities throughout the day, as directed.

  • Journeyman Heavy-Duty Field Mechanic

    Nelson River Construction Inc. (NRC) is currently hiring a motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently as a Journeyman Heavy-Duty Field Mechanic. (Red Seal).

    As a leading heavy construction contractor in Winnipeg MB, NRC operates inter-provincially with the expertise in many areas of heavy construction; from aggregate processing, concrete, asphalt paving and underground services.

    The successful candidate must be willing to work out of town and at times in a camp environment.

    Qualifications:

    -Certified Heavy-Duty Journeyman mechanic

    -Red Seal Certified

    Requirements:

    -A minimum of 2 years’ previous experience in heavy duty diesel mechanics

    -The ability to work with minimal direct supervision in diagnosing, trouble-shooting and repairing heavy equipment

    -A strong understanding of computerized repair and testing procedures

    -Skills in ET / SIS / SIS Web / STW are an asset

    -Focused, energetic and organized with superior attention to detail and sense of urgency

    -Adaptable to on-call working schedules and willing to work in all-weather conditions

    -Construction experience an asset

    -Shop and field work experience with a basic knowledge of cutting, welding and fabrication

    -Able to read and understand prints, drawings and technical bulletins

Erv Petkau, CSC

Vice President and Equipment Division Manager

Erv is responsible for our extensive equipment fleet. He oversees all equipment operational activities including purchasing and renting and directs and oversees our repairs and maintenance division ensuring quality and reliable equipment is available throughout the company.

Brad Morton, P. Eng., GSC

Vice President and Underground Division Manager

Brad is the Manager of the Underground Division for Nelson River Construction. Brad has over thirty years experience in engineering design, contract administration and project management for infrastructure projects for the City of Winnipeg, Winnipeg Airports Authority and Manitoba Infrastructure. He has been involved in asset evaluation, management, maintenance and rehabilitation planning and construction related to sewer and water systems and pumps stations on many projects during his career. Brad was the Construction Manager for the land drainage pump stations at the University of Manitoba and the WAA, both projects involved significant shoring, structural concrete and sub-contractor coordination. Brad’s common sense approach combined with his consulting and construction experience consistently results in quality projects which are delivered to clients on time and on budget.

Robert Boyechko

Aggregates Division Manager

Robert is our Aggregate Manger responsible for the planning, organizing, directing and control of raw material production at our various quarry holdings throughout the province. With over twenty-five years of experience, Robert identifies opportunities and develops strategies for improved efficiency and production. Addressing the needs of our internal divisions and our Customers is a major responsibility. Robert ensures environmental compliance, rehabilitation and permit obligations are maintained. He also provides research and testing of new and existing quarries.

Gord Lee, P. Eng., GSC

President & CEO

Gord has been with the company since 1985 and has served in several different capacities during his career. He was appointed President and CEO in 2002. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering at University of Manitoba in 1985, his Professional Engineer designation in 1987 and his Gold Seal Certificate in Project Management from the Canadian Construction Association in 1999.

Gord is an active member of the Winnipeg construction community and has served as Chair of the Board of Directors for the Manitoba Heavy Construction Association, Chair of the Board of Directors of the Western Canada Roadbuilders and Heavy Construction Association. He is a past member of the Board of Directors for the Canadian Construction Association. He has served as Chair of the Manitoba Construction Sector Council since 2011 and has represented the Heavy Construction Industry on the Construction Industry Wages Act Review Panel since 2009. He is a Director on the Board of the Health Sciences Center Foundation.

Steve Kosmac, C.E.T., GSC

Concrete Division Manager

Steve is the Manager of the Concrete Division for Nelson River Construction. He has over 20 years’ experience in the management of City and Highway roadway projects, Airport projects and a variety of structural concrete rehabilitation projects some of which include bridge modification work. His experience in the planning, organizing and coordination of the multiple Subtrades related to Utilities, Landscaping, and Electrical infrastructure is meticulous by nature. His extensive experience on roadway related projects makes him an integral contributor to the management of our projects

Ray Bissonnette, CRSP, CHSC

Safety Health, & Loss Prevention Manager

Ray has over a decade of experience in the Safety and Health field and is our Manager of Safety, Health & Loss Prevention. Ray has played a key role in the ongoing development and expansion of the company Safety, Health & Loss Prevention program, with the goal to minimize worker injuries and company losses. Ray’s experience includes policy and procedure development, coordinating training, conducting company safety audits, accident prevention, team building, and incident tracking and investigations, managing insurance loss claims, and identifying company risk.

Marcel Machado, B.Sc. C.E.

Asphalt Division Manager

Marcel oversees the day-to-day operations of the asphalt paving division at Nelson River including the estimating, tendering, project management, and construction of various infrastructure projects. Marcel has overseen the successful completion of numerous projects including highways, roads, airports, and parking lots for a wide variety of government and private sector clients under both traditional and design-build construction models. With nearly 30 years of experience in the roadbuilding and paving industry, Marcel brings a wealth of knowledge to each project he is involved with.

John Hudohmet, CPA – CMA

CFO

John is responsible for the financial management of the company. He is an experienced business professional with an extensive background in accounting and finance, management information systems and planning. John works closely with the entire management team providing financial and operational support.
